Scottish MP lodged a motion for the trial of Co-chair Yüksekdağ

Ross Greer, a Member of Scottish Parliament has lodged a motion in the Scottish Parliament condemning the trial of Figen Yüksekdağ and the clampdown against the democratic opposition.

The motion was supported by MPs Ruth Maguire, Stewart Stevenson and John Finnie.

The motion reads as follows:

Motion S5M-06687: Ross Greer, West Scotland, Scottish Green Party, Date Lodged: 12/07/2017

Trial of HDP Co-chair, Figen Yüksekdag

That the Parliament notes that 4 July 2017 was the first day of the trial of the co-chair of the People's Democratic Party (HDP), Figen Yüksekdag, on charges brought by the Turkish Government; condemns the reported removal of international observers from the court; expresses concern that the charges brought against Figen Yüksekdag are, it believes, designed to undermine democratic opposition to the Turkish Government; considers these charges to be part of a broader move towards autocracy in Turkey under the government of President Erdogan; understands that there is widespread international criticism and concern regarding the reported mass arrests of opposition parliamentarians and party staff, as well as journalists and other critics of the Erdogan government, and calls for what it believes are spurious charges against Figen Yüksekdag, and other HDP parliamentarians, to be dropped.
